The English past tense as a definite description

چکیده

There are two major groups of analyses in the literature on English past tense; existential semantics with domain restriction, and pronominal (i.e. anaphoric) analysis. In this paper, I discuss a group data difficult for both these analyses: obligatory use some contexts without any salient antecedent, such as asking Who built church when pointing at (Kratzer 1998). The analysis predicts that tense should be infelicitous, while restriction cannot account distribution data. argue observations follow from lexical ambiguity between an anaphoric uniqueness reading, parallel to similar patterns definites (Schwarz 2009: a.o.).

Over the last decade the focus of this debate has been the contrast between classical views of mental computation, seen as the rule-based manipulation of strings of symbols with a syntax, as opposed to more distributed systems, operating subsymbolically and without syntax. Despite the pervasive and crucial nature of this debate, it has nonetheless been har...

Irregular past tense formation in English interlanguage

In 1983, when I attended my first linguistics course, taught by one Professor Rüdiger Zimmermann, Joan Bybee and Carol Moder published an article on „Morphological classes as natural categories“ in Language. In this article they argued that prototype theory can be applied to morphological classes, in particular ablaut classes in English verb morphology. Their experimental results indicated that...

A Distributed Model of the English Past Tense Formation

We developed a version of the Joanisse and Seidenberg (1999) past-tense model to address two issues: whether the model’s performance depended on the use of localist semantic representations, and the challenges to this account presented by a patient who was impaired in generating irregular past tenses despite apparently intact semantics. The model also demonstrates the frequency by regularity in...

A connectionist model of english past tense and plural morphology

The acquisition of English noun and verb morphology is modeled using a single-system connectionist network. The network is trained to produce the plurals and past tense forms of a large corpus of monosyllabic English nouns and verbs. The developmental trajectory of network performance is analyzed in detail and is shown to mimic a number of important features of the acquisition of English noun a...
